1. Proposal Ceremony

This is an essential part of the traditional Vietnamese wedding ceremony to formalize the marriage relationship of two people. Today, the proposal ceremony is no longer held in the old way but is just a meeting between two families.

The groom’s family went to the girl’s house to officially ask the couple to be free to move around and continue getting to know each other more carefully before coming to a marriage decision.

There is no need for a matchmaker’s appointment role and no cumbersome offerings in this ceremony. After the ceremony, the daughter is considered already has an owner.

2. Engagement Ceremony.

The betrothal ceremony is the official union announcement of two families. Although many wedding ceremonies have been reduced, the engagement ceremony is one of the main parts still maintained in Vietnamese culture.

This wedding ceremony marks a crucial turning point in the marriage relationship. The girl will officially become the man’s fiancĂ©e.

The offerings of the interrogation are fresh areca, nuggets, tea (tea), wine, wife cakes, money envelopes, roasted pigs, fruits… to show the groom’s family’s gratitude for their parents’ girl.

The number of fruit trays in the engagement ceremony may be even or odd depending on the custom and region. However, people often choose the number of wedding trays that are number even. This symbolizes the meaning of having a couple.

3. Vietnamese Wedding Ceremony

The wedding ceremony is the culmination of every traditional Vietnamese wedding rite and the marriage details. The entire wedding ceremony includes two rituals:

Bridesmaid’s Ceremony.

Before the time to welcome the bride, the groom’s mother and a family member will go to the bride’s house to bring betel nut and wine bottle to herald the bridegroom’s delegation’s arrival. The bride’s family can rest assured to prepare for the reception.

The ceremony to bring the bride to the groom’s house.

No matter what means of transport the bridegroom’s procession uses, it must “re-align the squad” before entering the bride’s house.

In the wedding procession, the head of the delegation usually represents the groom’s family, followed by the groom’s father, the groom, and his friends. The bride’s procession should have a compact formation so that everything goes faster and more comfortably.

After entering the girl’s house, the groom’s family is invited to sit down. The two sides introduced each other; after a week of tea, the groom’s representative stood up and said a few words to the girl’s family, asking to receive the bride officially.

When allowed by the bride’s family, the groom enters the inner room to give flowers to the bride, and the bride comes in front of the altar to light incense and then greets parents and relatives on both sides informal traditional ao dai.

The bride’s parents instruct the young couple on living, love, and marital ethics. After that, the representative of the groom’s family will answer on behalf of the groom and ask to take the bride to the car. The bride’s family will follow the flower car to the groom’s house to attend the wedding party.

Arriving at the groom’s house, the first thing the bride and groom do is lead their parents to the altar to burn incense, pay homage to the ancestors, and then greet the relatives on the husband’s side. Then the groom’s family invites the bride’s family and all the people to attend the wedding party.

4. Thanksgiving Bride’s Parent’s Ceremony

After the wedding day, the mother-in-law will prepare a small ceremony tray for the couple to bring back to the bride’s house. The couple returns to the bride’s home from 1 to 4 days after the wedding ceremony.

The time will depend on the geographical distance between the two houses and the conditions and work of the young couple. Usually, the ceremony takes place in the morning.
